For the TL;DR people.

DCM = The FDA is continuing to investigate more than 500 reports of dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, in dogs eating certain types of pet food. A form of canine heart disease, DCM can cause congestive heart failure in dogs.

Here is the list of 16 pet food brands and the number of reported DCM cases that the FDA suspects are related to each brand:

Acana: 67

Zignature: 64

Taste of the Wild: 53

4Health: 32

Earthborn Holistic: 32

Blue Buffalo: 31

Nature’s Domain: 29

Fromm: 24

Merrick: 16

California Natural: 15

Natural Balance: 15

Orijen: 12

Nature’s Variety: 11

NutriSource: 10

Nutro: 10

Rachael Ray Nutrish: 10

And of course the companies’ responses don’t agree there is any link.

And my cheap-ish Petsmart brand grain-free is not on there. Nice.

“Despite millions of dollars of research, death continues to be our nation’s number one killer.” (Kentucky Fried Movie). I dislike these news reports as they lack so much information such as sample size, prior reporting, breed, age, etc. Correlation is not causation. Perhaps there is more to the story on the grain free part, but they only include a quick blurb on that. I’ve fed my dog Blue Buffalo (not grain free) for about 4 years.  Will need to read more about this before I switch.

No mention of leftover KFC chicken bones; I guess those owners die before the dogs so it doesn’t get reported

That source link is busted, but here’s another outlining what I believe you are talking about (DCM report from FDA). https://woofwhiskers.com/dcm-linked-to-16-dog-food-brands/

What I think is more valuable information than the brand listing, is the ingredients. 93% had peas/lentils as a main ingredient, and 91% were grain free.
